An amazing story and development
Tany mena is managed by an experienced team engaged in the field in Madagascar. Their motto is "Quality comes first, the fair price is essential but justified, commitment is enriching".
Founded by environmentalist and humanist, essential oil expert Olivier Behra, Tany mena has been offering bulk essential oils to perfumery and aromatherapy companies from Madagascar for over 20 years. Tany mena is primarily a social and solidarity-based company created to support the involvement of local communities in the proper management of the environment and the conservation of forests and biodiversity. The Malagasy company is mainly owned by the international solidarity association "L’Homme et l’Environnement" to ensure maximum local impact.
Passing on and Sharing
Olivier Behra worked on understanding the quality of production and is the author of several scientific publications to promote the quality and properties of essential oils.
He subsequently initiated numerous research projects with international institutions such as CIRAD and Rutgers University in the United States in partnership with Malagasy agronomic research organizations to help understand the variation in chemical composition and properties of essential oils. The production and marketing of Tany mena Madagascar has been managed autonomously for over 12 years by the teams he trained and put in place over the past 25 years.
In the field, farmers are trained to adopt agricultural practices that regenerate biodiversity, but also to learn to distill themselves, and also to use their essential oils.
The first pro-biodiversity and pro-climate fair trade enterprise
Tany mena was founded to have positive impacts on biodiversity conservation and climate. Fair trade is not enough, and health and education are promoted for local populations with the NGO "L’Homme et l’Environnement," including the construction and management of lacking basic infrastructure.
For Tany mena, producing without pesticides or chemical fertilizers is essential but not sufficient. Productions are carried out within management plans that include forest conservation and biodiversity regeneration.

Wildlife Friendly®
Tany mena has taken steps to demonstrate its commitments. The Malagasy company was the first producer of essential oils to be certified for its fair and organic commitments to biodiversity by UEBT (Union for Ethical Bio Trade). Tany mena's essential oils are also the world's first to be certified Wildlife Friendly®, proving that their production methods support wildlife conservation.

VOHIMANA
We work there with the NGO Man and the Environment with nearly 400 farmers, men and women and hundreds of plant collectors around 600 hectares of primary forest unique in the world. The conservation program linked to development created by Olivier Behra, and the incredible local knowledge of plants have earned Vohimana recognition by the United Nations as an Intangible World Heritage Site. The Vohimana Forest is a sanctuary for 12 species of lemurs and is home to more than 160 medicinal plants.
The crater lakes of Nosy Be
It was a biologist specializing in fish who alerted Olivier Behra about fifteen years ago to the deterioration of the water in the lakes of Mont Passot, even though these are not only the water reserves of the populations of the island of Nosy Be but also the habitat of rare endemic fish. The NGO Man and the Environment decided to help protect the lake area against erosion by planting ylang ylang trees with local communities and Tany mena committed to purchasing the essential oils which could thus be produced. The first trees planted are producing and 80 farmers have been supported since 2020 to plant more ylang ylang but also fruit trees for their food uses.
Tsianinkira-Ambalakalanoro
This area is very remote in western Madagascar, 60 km from the first road but by the sea. It is to support the involvement of local populations in the sustainable management of their forests that Olivier Behra decided to launch here, more than 20 years ago, the production of an essential oil, still unknown at the time, which he named Saro. 500 hectares of forests are the subject of management programs for the sustainable production of leaves with the women of 3 villages and, in the north of the area, the incredible site of Ambalakalanoro has been protected since 2008. Its forest is a refuge for Coquerel's Syfaka, one of the 25 most endangered primates in the world.
Manakara, Fohisokina et autres sites
Tany mena Madagascar has created a farm on the east coast to produce top quality cinnamon, cloves and vanilla on 90 hectares, and in the highlands Tany mena works with farmers to produce the best bourbon geranium. quality that is. One of the objectives is to support the populations of the village of Fohisokina to help conserve the incredible Madagascar Harlequin Mantella, a multicolored frog of which there are probably only a few dozen specimens left in the world.
Madagascar et la gestion
d’Tany mena
Tany mena sarl in Madagascar is a social and solidarity company whose 100% of profits are reinvested for development and reforestation. Its founder, Olivier Behra is the Honorary President but for more than 12 years it has been managed with brilliance and rigor by the team he put in place, Adana Radaniela as general management, Nirina as administration and in finance and Ravalo in commercial management, a team which is supported by a volunteer manager, Alan Prat. Thanks to its high-quality exports around the world, the Malagasy company has been generating income for 3,000 to 6,900 people per year for 8 years, creating the equivalent of 600 to 1,000 full-time jobs.
Olivier Behra decided in 2022 to create an Tany mena structure in France. It is about allowing aromatherapy professionals and individuals to benefit directly from the best of the essential oils produced, but also to allow everyone to contribute directly to rural development and biodiversity conservation programs. The team is led by Olivier Behra, assisted for research and development by the nose chemist Manon Marceau, for the coordination of the production and environmental conservation teams by Saroy Rasoloson and for marketing by Elina Kandjy and her teams.
